Diep Quy Hai, born in 1971, currently is a painter and art professor at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts. His artworks feature in the collections of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and the Ho Chi Minh Fine Arts Museum. In a long period before, Diep Quy Hai took inspiration from Oil material to create abstract paintings. Recently, he has turned his focus to experimenting on Lacquer painting by using additive materials to emboss on the painting surface. His works attract viewer by using typical basic color of the traditional Lacquer such as gold, stone-red, green, and above all, shapes and forms. Audience can easily recognize some simple visual symbols in his paintings such as: the continuous connected circles, dashes, wave-lines which associate with the patterns using in ancient art like on the Dong Son Bronze drum. These symbols bring a familiar feeling to viewer, encourage their imagination ability to ponder the idea of the artist.
